I decided to enrol in an intensive language course at the Goethe Institute and I am enjoying it very much.

The first week of the course was quite a shock. I realised I have a lot of hard work ahead of me and I am looking forward to it.

My classmates are an international motley crew and I have made an interesting friend in Dylan – a contemporary classical composer and musician from New Zealand. I have been quizzing Dylan about all things music and it has been a great education into areas of music with which I am not particularly familiar.

Talking with Dylan has also been a great opportunity to gain an understanding of his compositional process.

His creative process is intriguing and it has been fascinating to understand some of the intricacies involved in the creation of a piece of written music. The methods and aims are complex and the academic nature of contemporary classical music ensures a creative rigour.

While it has been fun
to enjoy evenings with my classmates and the conversations have been stimulating I do enjoy the anonymity I have when I tackle the city alone. The solitude runs a fine line between a liberating sense of freedom and isolation. I am certain that the sense of isolation will become less apparent as my language skills develop and I am more capable to socialise.

I feel very vulnerable without language and I am looking forward to the confidence that more developed language skills will bring.
