While in Berlin I have had the pleasure of discovering 032c. 032c is a magazine published biannually in Berlin that focuses on contemporary culture with a distinct leaning toward the visual. 032c is edited thematically and occupies a unique position somewhere at the intersections of art, critical theory, design, fashion and politics. The magazine is distributed throughout the world and is published exclusively in English.

On Thursday 17 August I met with 032c creative director/editor and founder Joerg Koch for a morning discussion about all things 032c.

My studio visits have provided me with the opportunity to observe a diversity of design related practices and my meeting with Joerg offered me a wonderful introduction to the particulars of boutique magazine publishing.

Joerg came to magazine publishing from an interesting position. Before founding 032c he ran a small gallery space in Berlin. The space was unusual in that it did not operate as a commercial gallery and Joerg described it as being like a three dimensional fanzine. Joerg saw the move to publishing as a natural progression of his activities with the gallery – certainly his curatorial skills have been indispensable in directing and editing the magazine.

032c started as a somewhat modest production of monotone printing on newsprint. Over the course of five years it developed into the lavish production that it is today – the current issue of the magazine belies its humble beginnings.

Joerg explained that 032c blossomed from a simple impulse to publish a magazine and insisted its founding was relatively straightforward. Joerg grew up in an era of hardcore and punk subculture. That subculture was fuelled by an independent DIY conviction and 032c was a product of that drive for independence.
