On Wednesday 28 June I had a meeting with Nick Kapica at his studio SV Associates (Ständige Vertretung) in Berlin.

SV Associates is a compact and unassuming studio producing work for both commercial and cultural clients. The studio has produced a body of work that expresses a clear penchant for functional aesthetics and focused typography. This strong sense of pragmatism has led to a number of significant commissions including work for the Berlin Airport.

Some of the best known work the studio has produced has been for the Berlin theatre company Sophiensaele. Nick showed me a collection of calendar posters both past and present that the studio had developed for Sophiensaele. The underlying process in the creation of the calendar posters was programmatic using overprinting to produce posters of beautiful functional complexity. The colour combinations were determined by the overprinting process yielding unpredictable and exciting results.

Much of the work of SV Associates exhibits parallels with British Neo-Modernism and Nick cites 8vo as a significant influence.

In addition to talking with Nick about things design our conversation also offered me a wonderful insight into the history of Berlin in the immediate years following the fall of the wall. Nick moved to Berlin from London in 1989 and formed SV Associates as a hybrid operation that pursued a number of activities including the running of a bar and club and a little graphic design. The activities were eventually consolidated and the studio proper was born.

It was interesting to meet Nick and to learn more about his work methods and his unusual and fluid career path.

Vielen Dank Nick.
