On Friday 03 November I had a meeting with Anja Lutz at her studio in Prenzlauer Berg.

Anja has enjoyed an international education. She initially studied at the London College of Printing after which she decided to continue her academic pursuits with post-graduate studies at the prestigious Jan van Eyck Akademie in the Netherlands. Anja is editor and founder of the Berlin experimental publication platform Shift. She founded Shift during the mid 1990s as a collaborative project that sought to publish regular thematic issues. During the latter part of the decade Anja altered the approach of Shift in order to explore more focused investigations.
The format of Shift was forever changing to suit the context of each project. Over the years Shift has taken on a variety of different forms. It has been supplemented with audio media, presented as an interactive screen and board game, while another outcome saw past issues recycled to produce novel reappropriations that included pillows and purses and all sorts of other inspired creations.

Shift no longer operates as a regular publication and has been transformed to become a platform with which Anja is able to realise her publishing ideas. Collaboration remains important to her process and often lies at the core of her activities. As such Anja has developed a vast network of international colleagues.
Many of the projects Anja has initiated delve beneath the surface of graphic design and explore its complexities within broader social and cultural contexts. This investigative approach is perhaps most clearly expressed in her two most recent projects. Anja recently collaborated with the London based graphic designer and writer Anna Gerber to produce the book Influences. Influences is described as a lexicon of contemporary graphic design and the book assembles a comprehensive collection of diverse references. These references were offered by a diverse group of international designers and provide a wealth of information.
