On Monday 05 June I had a meeting with Markus Weisbeck at the Berlin office of Surface.

I have long admired the work of Surface and my meeting with Markus was a great opportunity to discuss the work of the studio in more depth. Surface has created a compelling body of work that often utilises technology as the creative foundation.

The passion Markus has for technology driven solutions is exciting and it has seen Surface produce a number of significant pieces of work that are inspiring in their thinking and use of technology.

Although I was familiar with the identity Surface had developed for Rhizome it was interesting to speak with Markus about the project and gain a greater insight into this revolutionary solution. The identity that Surface developed for Rhizome in 2000 is one of the most interesting examples of fluid branding.

The Rhizome identity is a fluid brand that utilises technology to determine its form. The identity employs some simple software that records the previously visited IP addresses of the Rhizome visitor. This IP information is then used to generate a unique image that is specific to the Rhizome visitor for that visit.

The identity is not a predetermined form but rather a matrix of aesthetic possibilities within which the identity is realised.

The Rhizome identity is a beautifully simple solution that comprises a few basic components including an online GIF image generator and a little javascript that instructs web browsers to remove the GIF image from the data cache. Markus described these components as small. Despite their size the output they help create is infinitely rich.
