One of the most recent projects that Surface had completed was the new identity for the international lighting manufacturer Zumtobel.

The identity was the output of a calculation in postscript language. The resultant image illustrates the transition from day to night through a radial tonal gradation.

I feel an affinity to the idea of using the computer as a chief collaborator in the design process. Most often the computer is used to make existing design and production processes more efficient. It is rare that it is used in ways that harness its enormous and unusual creative potential.

Surface has utilised technology in exciting and unpredictable ways. It was fascinating to talk with Markus about the details of his exciting work.
