On Tuesday 12 September I had a meeting with Andreas Koch at his studio Büro für Film und Gestaltung.

Andreas was formally educated as a visual artist and it was his work in the early 1990s with the independent Berlin newspaper Scheinschlage that he developed his abilities in graphic design. Andreas does not consider himself a designer and his design work is almost exclusively concerned with the contemporary art community – in the form of publication design.

Some of the most beautiful books Andreas has designed have been for the internationally renowned contemporary artist Olafur Elliason. These books presented intelligent and often whimsical extensions of their content. It was fascinating to see how effortlessly Andreas had developed skills for publication design. Everything from microtypography to the choice and use of materials evidenced his confidence and skill.

Andreas uses his design commissions to fund his art practice which investigates intriguing spacial curiosities and this sensibility often informs his graphic design activities.

Andreas maintains a definite desire to keep the studio organisation informal and small. In this way his energies can be directed to the actual work rather than the managing of it – he remains thoroughly passionate about the production.

Andreas pursues two paths that are in synergy with one another. His ability to imaginatively mix disciplines and his unassuming confidence were stimulating.

Vielen Dank Andreas.
