Fons believes it is essential that students leave university equipped with practical knowledge. It was interesting to learn that the internship system for graphic design students in Austria and Germany is compulsory – they must complete a minimum of six months of practical experience in order to qualify for graduation.

It was refreshing to meet such a successful designer and discover his intense commitment to education – it is a relatively uncommon combination in Melbourne. Fons explained that a university appointment is one of the highest honours a professional designer can receive. The universities in Austria and Germany are particular in pursuing designers that are exemplar practitioners. This recruitment model ensures that students receive tutelage from the very best practitioners and promotes a diverse and contemporary education.

In 2007 Fons will conclude his class in Vienna and relocate his educational commitments to the Universität der Kunst in Berlin.

Fons possesses an unrelenting dynamism that has seen him produce an abundant and inspiring body of work and educate a new generation of Austrian and German designers. His accomplishments within the field of education offer an exciting alternative to design education norms.

Vielen Dank Fons.
